The Glades County Democrat covers several cities and communities within the county including Moore Haven, Lakeport, Muse, Buckhead Ridge, Palmdale, Ortona and the Brighten Seminole Indian Reservation.
James A. Moore, a developer from Seattle, started Moore Haven, the first real town in the Everglades, in 1915. Today, it is supported by its cattle, sugar cane, fishing, citrus and produce industries. Tourism and sport fisherman have also discovered Moore Haven.
The first weekend of March, the Chalo Nitka “Day of the Big Bass” Festival takes place. It features a pet parade, haystack scramble, small fry fishing contest and 4-H steer show. The newly crowned Chalo Nitka Queen joins a colorful parade of floats and marching bands, Seminole Indian crafts and food, as well as rodeo music and clogging, round out the activities.
