New palmetto berry laws
The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a public forum to provide information regarding the new palmetto berry laws instituted by the Florida Department of Agriculture on Thursday, Aug. 2, 7 p.m., at the Okeechobee Civic Center, 1750 N. U.S. 98. Anyone who owns palmetto berries and intends to harvest them as well as anyone who plans to pick them should attend the forum as the new laws will affect you.

Moore Haven American Legion meeting set Aug. 3
The Moore Haven American Legion Post 299 will hold a meeting on Friday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m., at the Headquarters Home located at 600 River Road in Moore Haven. A complimentary dinner prepared by a Post member will be served to all attendees without charge. Lock to close for repairs
Boaters navigating to and from Lake Okeechobee, the S-127 navigation lock at Buckhead Ridge in Glades County is scheduled to be closed from Monday, Aug. 13, through Wednesday, Aug. 22. During that time, staff from the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) Okeechobee Field Station will be conducting repairs to the lock.

Carpentry, HVAC, electrical, welding, and plumbing pre-registration dates will be accepted through Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Registration dates are Aug. 21-23 from 6-8 p.m. Classes begin Sept. 11.

HGUNC offers help

The mission of the Hendry/Glades Unmet Needs Coalition (HGUNC) is to partner with faith-based organizations, volunteer and social agencies, governmental agencies, community-based organizations, business and individual volunteers who seek to address the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of the individuals and families affected by natural and manmade disasters in Hendry and Glades counties.
