Low -income seniors who are eligible can sign up for the program from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, at the Hope Connections Location at 30082 State Road 78 W, Suite A, Buckhead Ridge, Okeechobee. The phone number is 855-454-3104.

To qualify, an applicant must be at least 60 years old and earn a gross income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line. For example, a two-person household with an annual gross income of $21,172 would qualify.

The healthy food seniors receive aims to keep them from having to make hard choices like eating or paying bills or buying medicine. Clients are seniors like Joe and his wife, who live on Joe’s Social Security payments. “When I first had to collect food, I had tears in my eyes,” he said. “So many times it’s saved us.”
