GCWC starts new year off with full schedule

GLADES COUNTY — Glades County Woman’s Club President Marina Langdale started the new club year off with a full schedule. She began the recent meeting by appointing club chairmen and a chaplain.

The GCWC is the only service club in Glades County, and membership is by invitation only. Prospective members must be sponsored by an active member of the club. Any club member can provide an application.

Mrs. Langdale emphasized that one of the club’s main community projects, free mammograms to qualified Glades County residents who do not have insurance to cover them, is still in place. Glades County residents are encouraged to apply by downloading an application from the club’s Facebook page, or through any club member. It is urgent that Glades County residents take advantage of this free offer, and schedule a mammogram ASAP, if they qualify.

The Miss Glades County Pageant, which the club sponsors, has been rescheduled to a later date. Be sure to watch the Lake Okeechobee News for the new date.

Some of the scheduled events for the coming club year are Healing of the Yards (any club member can explain this), scheduled for Oct. 1. A rib cook-off will take place on Oct. 6. The entry fee for the cook-off will be $50, with entrants furnishing their own ribs. A turkey shoot is scheduled for Nov. 8, with a 50/50 drawing. The president announced that she has a donation of $500 to be raffled.

Proceeds from all these events will go toward scholarships and cancer awareness.

GCWC is sponsoring a Christmas tree decorating contest for businesses. The money from this will go toward scholarships. The entry fee is $25. Look for more on this event closer to the time.
