Glades County traffic collision left two dead

GLADES COUNTY — On Thursday, Jan. 4, at approximately 11:03 p.m., two people reportedly have died, one is in critical condition and one is in serious condition after a traffic crash that involved four vehicles..

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) press release stated Benjamin J. Desjardine, 40, of Iowa, Louisiana, was driving a 2005 Dodge Ram truck traveling north on County Road 721.

Shannon Lee Garrett, 19, of Clewiston – driving a 2005 Ford 500, a 2017 Hyundai Sonata – driven by Michael Steven Furrow, 55, of Lehigh Acres and a 2011 Ford F150 – driven by Linda Sue Tommie, 61, of Okeechobee – traveling south on County Road 721.

Tracy Agnes Cypress, 20, of Okeechobee was a pedestrian.

The Dodge Ram reportedly traveled into the southbound lanes causing the Ford 500 to swerve to avoid a collision. As a result the 2005 Ford 500 rotated and struck a guardrail on the west shoulder and came to rest facing north within the southbound lane.

The Dodge Ram continued north in the southbound lane as the Sonata approached, causing the front of the truck to collide with the front of the Sonata.

The Dodge Ram then overturned coming to final rest on the east shoulder.

The Sonata rotated and came to rest facing north from within the southbound lane.

An uninvolved vehicle transporting Ms. Cypress stopped to render aid to the Dodge Ram and Sonata.

Due to the Sonata becoming disabled in the crash on the dark roadway, the front of the Ford F150 swerved to avoid a collision but struck the right front of the Sonata. The Ford F150 then struck Ms. Cypress, the pedestrian, and a guardrail before coming to final rest within the west shoulder.

Mr. Desjardine was reported to have been transported to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition from injuries sustained in the collision.

Mr. Furrow was reported to have been transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical and died from injuries sustained in the accident.

A passenger in the Sonata, Robert Lewis Yale, 71, of Lehigh Acres was transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical and died from injuries sustained in the collision.
