A Lakeport man was arrested Thanksgiving Day and charged with murder after he allegedly confessed to killing his girlfriend.

Aaron Ellis Glen Morgan, 27, is accused of shooting his girlfriend, 41-year-old Rachel Thonnes, of Lakeport, to death. At around 3:46 a.m. on Nov. 26, Glades County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 1029 Duck Lane in Lakeport in reference to a shooting and possible homicide.

Morgan allegedly called 911 himself to report the incident, according to an arrest report released by the sheriff’s office.

During the call, Morgan reportedly told 911 dispatch that he had just shot his girlfriend in the head with a .357 pistol.

When deputies arrived at the home, Morgan would not come out of the house at first, but eventually deputies secured him in the back of their patrol vehicle, according to the report.

Inside the home, deputies found Rachel Thonnes lying on the floor in a pool of blood with a gunshot wound to her head.

Morgan was arrested and charged with murder, a capital offense. Morgan was taken to the sheriff’s office where he was questioned by detectives. According to the report, Morgan told detectives he would not make a statement unless he was guaranteed the death penalty. Though detectives told Morgan they could not guarantee his sentencing, Morgan reportedly told them he and Thonnes had made a suicide pact.

Morgan stated he had recently lost his grandmother and grandfather and he and Thonnes allegedly made a pact to park their vehicle in the garage and run a tube from the exhaust pipe into the passenger compartment.

and Thonnes had two children in common, both of whom were given up for adoption, according to Morgan.

Morgan is currently being held in the Glades County Detention Center without bond.
