Moore Haven man in wheelchair killed in traffic crash

MOORE HAVEN — A Moore Haven man was operating a wheelchair when he lost his life in a highway accident March 2.

According to the FHP, on Thursday, March 2, at 7:45 p.m. Stephen Guy Hinkofer, 61, of Moore Haven was operating a Permobil C300 Wheelchair southbound on US 27 and Fourth Street when he failed to yeild to oncoming westbound traffic on US 27, proceeding south across the westbound lanes of US 27 into the path of a 2006 Hyundair Sonata driven by Melissa Hamaji, 21, of Lakeland.

The right front of the 2006 Hyundai Sonata struck the electric wheelchair. Collision impact ejected Hinkofer and he landed in the inside lane and his wheelchair landed in the outside lane. The Hyundai continued to travel west before stopping.

Reportedly Stephen Hinkofer was pronounced deceased at the scene. Melissa Hamaji reportedly did not receive injuries.
